Nokia acquires Novarra, Strengthen its Mobile Web Browser

novarraThe world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia, strengthen the web browser features for mobile device with the acquisition of Novarra, a developer of web browser for mobile device which is based in Chicago.

“Mobile browsers and Novarra-made services platform will be used to provide a better internet experience on Nokia mobile phones,” Nokia said in the press release after the acquisition last week.

Novarra browser named Vision supports Flash content and video, complex HTML with JavaScript and AJAX, RSS, and widgets. Other features are also as sophisticated as other desktop browser as fit the screen options, zooming, scrolling, and password management.

Until now Novarra browser has been used in many different cell phone vendors including Nokia, Motorola, LTE, Kyocera, and Motorola. Novarra browser was developed for GSM and CDMA based devices.

Google Acquired DocVerse to Attract Microsoft Office Users

docverseGoogle aggressively made an acquisitions to strengthen its portfolio to compete in software and services business. The last company acquired was DocVerse, a start-up company that developed the service to edit Microsoft Office files online.

Google willing to spend 25 million U.S. dollars for DocVerse which had headquarter in San Francisco. They would do that to attract the users who have been used MS Office for a long time. Unable to take over users with a package of Google Docs, they provide new services for MS Office users. This could still attract attention.

In an interview quoted by the Wall Street Journal last week, Jonathan Rochelle as Google Apps product manager said, DocVerse software eases the transition from desktop to online. DocVerse will become part of Google Apps to serve users who need to share documents created with MS Office.

DocVerse founded 2.5 years ago by two former Microsoft employees, Shan Sinha and Alex DeNeui. Not only providing a document sharing service, DocVerse also provide a comment feature that can be used as a forum for discussion of the documents that were displayed. DocVerse officially became part of Google’s portfolio at March 5, 2010.

Nokia Create a Cheap "Smartphone"

nokia-c5Nokia create new products to prevent its declining market in the world. The world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones is going to introduce cheaper smart phones to compete with similar products of Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc.

The new phone called the C5. This phone is the first series of new “family” of Nokia mobile phone, C-Series. “The focus of this phone is to create social interaction between family and friendship,” said Motorola spokesman Doug Dawson.

C5 design was supporting access to social networking. Nokia wants this phones that still have a traditional keypad to become choice of young people who liked to send short messages and accessing social networking sites.

So, Nokia set the C5 sale price at the cheap level. Each unit C5 sale at 135 euros, equivalent to 183 U.S. dollars, before taxes and subsidies. C5 will flood the markets of Europe, Asia, and Africa in the second quarter of 2010.

C5 size was small enough. The length is 112 millimeters (mm), width 46 mm, and thickness 12 mm. C5 battery stand to speak up to 12 hours and standby for 26 days. Weight 89.3 grams this phone.

C5 install the latest generation Symbian operating system, S60 third edition. C5 is fitted with social networking features built in.. Thus, consumers can instantly see the status of their friend on Facebook. Features chat, e-mail, and browsing are also in this phone. Nokia C5 provides high-speed data connectivity HSDPA / HSUPA for uploading photos and video.

This phone has a 2.2 inch screen and 3.2 megapixel camera. Every phone C5 are mounted 2-gigabyte memory card and can be enlarged up to 16 gigabytes. C5 also has a FM stereo.

Fun, C5 also includes the latest versions of Ovi Maps. These devices can make consumers share the sites being through social networking sites.

Nokia is trying to fight the banging from two mobile phone maker from Korea. C5 will be a strong competitor against Samsung Corby, Samsung Star, and the LG Cookie.

Pressure for Nokia in the mobile phone business is very hard. Last year, their net sales fell from 50.7 billion euros to 40.9 billion euros. Certainly, these numbers erode corporate profits which has 123,553 workers. Nokia profits down from 4.9 billion euros to 1.1 billion euros in the year 2009.
