Barcode scanner is a commonly used electronic device that reads printed barcodes. Also known as Point of sale scanner, it is widely used in areas where large number of goods or stock is involved, like in warehouses, library, supermarkets etc.

Barcodes are assigned on product labels usually to automate the process of sale or transaction. Each barcode has specific symbols defined as a series of bars.  A barcode scanner’s photo sensors can capture this coded data on barcodes and translate it into electronic pluses. This data when sent to a computer is then decoded into readable text using a special software application. The entire process happens very quickly and takes only a few milliseconds.

The main idea behind use of barcodes on product has been to track inventory and pricing of the product in a simplified and more efficient way. Use of barcode scanners makes the task of reading information on products 10 times faster than a person entering information by hand. This also means lesser room for human error. Hand held barcode scanners are often used like a pen where the operator swipes the scanner over the code to read it. Also known as cell phone or hand phone, the Mobile Phone is used for mobile telecommunications. An electronic device, the mobile phone can facilitate sound transmission, text messaging, and data transmission over the cellular network that is carried on from the specialized centres called cell sites and is easily the preferred medium of communication today.
Mobile Phones and Cordless Phones
Cordless phones make communication possible within limited ranges of 50 to 100 meters at best and are good for communicating within a home or the office premises. Base station with a fixed line is owned by the subscriber. Mobile phones on the other hand have no such range limitation as communication is possible to the farthest and remotest parts of the globe with it. Base station is not with the subscriber but with the cell site and provider.
Cell Phones, Satellite, and Radio Phones
In sharp contrast to the radio or satellite phones, the cell offers full duplex communication. Mobile phone also facilitates PLMN or the public land mobile network calling and paging from it, handoff moving from one cell to another, and connects to cellular networks consisting of switching points that are usually owned by a mobile network operator.
Smart Phone Function Features
Currently the mobile phones not only support the standard voice function but also various other features like text messaging, email services, gaming, web surfing, Bluetooth, packet switching, infrared, video recording, camera, MMS for transmission of images and video, radio, GPS, and MP3 player. In essence it is a multi-utility electronic device for any user.

Popularity of cell phones can be gauged from the fact that the International Telecommunication Union found during a survey that nearly 4. 6 billion people were using mobile phones by end of 2009. One of the features is that it is no more the fancy of the economically well to do sectors but has become an object of common use in all sectors of the society across the globe today. Usually mobile phone is used for multiple purposes for family communication, business, and telephone access in emergencies.

Talk time on the mobile phone refers to number of minutes the user can talk with a fully charged battery. Usually the time varies in the range of 100-750 minutes. Most used batteries for mobile phones are lithium polymer, lithium ion, and nickel metal hydrite. First two categories are slimmer with larger power capacity and do not discharge when the phone is switched off. Such batteries can be recharged without consequential reduction in capacity. Nickel batteries are heavier with less power capacity, discharges when not in use, and capacity reduces by frequent recharging. However sets with former lithium batteries cost higher.
Mobile Phone Size
Ordinarily one would find two sizes of mobile phones in the market; palm size and medium size. Palm size ones are easier carrying and can be conveniently kept in the pocket or purse.
