I think you should go for the Apple iPad because it is the latest tablet available in the market. This has the Apple’s operating system. This has the great design. It is very slim and good looking. Tablets are a cross between a smartphone and a laptop and are currently the most sought after device in the tech world right now.

So far, the Apple iPad has been the only mainstream contender for the number one tablet after selling over two million in the first two months of its release, but with the release of the Samsung Galaxy tab, and copious amounts of other anticipated tablet launches, Apple may  be forced to hand over the tablet crown.

Tablets are no doubt going to be this year’s most popular gift for Christmas, but how you do the impossible task of choosing which one to buy if you’re not particularly tech savvy?

Apple iPad

Samsung Galaxy

 

The Samsung Galaxy has a smaller touchscreen than the iPad at just 7 inches and weighs just 13.8 ounces. The screen resolution is a bit lower than the iPad at 1024 x 600, but the dots per inch are higher.

Unlike the iPad, it can be used as a phone, also has a 5MP camera and can support Flash. Its battery life is slightly less at just over 9 hours.

Google Android is a big selling point for the Samsung Galaxy and could clinch the sale for many fans of this operating system which also runs on smartphones such as the HTC Desire.

Although only around 200 apps will be available at launch, the price is anticipated to be a lot cheaper than the iPad.

Toshiba Folio 100

 

The Folio 100 is Toshiba’s entry into the tablet race, opting for a 10.1 inch touchscreen and weighing nearly twice as much as the Galaxy at 1.6 pounds.

Made by Fusion Garage, the JooJoo has been slated by tech reviewers for its tiny battery life at just 2.5 hours and its uninspiring user interface and lack of apps available.

It has a larger screen than the iPad at 12.1 inches, a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 and it boots up in just 9 seconds. It also has a front mounted camera and a USB port, which the iPad does not.

It’s very clear that the JooJoo is in need of a few tweaks here and there but reviewers have given this iPad alternative far too much of a hard time. After all, it supports Flash, looks sleek and is great for browsing the net whilst on the move.

Price:  £374                Release date: 2011 but already available in the US

Archos 10.1 Android

 

The French electronics company has jumped on the tablet bandwagon recently launching five tablets, one of them being the Archos Android tablet. The tablet has a 10 inch screen, weighs just 16.9 ounces and is 12mm thick. It has its own app store (appslib.com) with a sizable choice of 5,000 apps to choose from, has an Android OS, is WiFi enabled and comes with Bluetooth.

Its very easy on the eye with its stainless steel structure looking slick, has a front mounted camera, and a built-in leg stand. Other features include USB port, HDMI output, HD video playback and a MicroSD card supporting up to 16GB.

At over £150 cheaper than the iPad, this will be a serious contender for the most popular tablet.

So, as for which tablet to go with, I personally would go for the Samsung Galaxy or the Archos 101 Android tablet depending on your budget.

I certainly won’t be purchasing an iPad until all of its issues have been sorted out which won’t be until iPad 2 is released during 2011.

Fusion Garageâ??s JooJoo: The new device features a 12.1â? widescreen multi-touch capacitive display with 1366×768 pixel resolution and fingerprint-resistant coating. It also supports Wi-Fi 802.11(b/g), Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR wireless technology for internet connectivity. The tablet PC boasts 4GB SSD, Accelerometer, Ambient Light Sensor, 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack and weighs just 1.1 kg.

Archos 5 Internet tablet: The new tablet PC features 5-inch high-resolution touchscreen display, 3D GPS navigation and a choice of upto 250 GB of internal memory. However, the 8GB model costs at 9.99. It can play 720p video including WMV and H.264, over HDMI and supports 802.11n Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS connectivity.

ICD Ultra tablet PC: Recently, ICD has introduced a new tablet PC base on Android 2.0 Ã?clair, called Ultra. The new device features 7″ Touchscreen, 1.3 MP Web Cam, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor and Dual digital microphones. It is powered by NVIDIA Tegra, 512 DDR / 512 NAND, and supports 4GB Internal SD. For connectivity, the device supports Bluetooth 2.1, Wireless 802.11 b/g, 2g/3g Data and USB 2.0.

Discussion

Various other companies like GiiNii, Camangi, NEC, Moto, etc are also working on the Android-based tablets. The new tablets can differ in sizes, which will resemble iPod touch or MIDs available in the market. However, the success of these devices will depend on the prices, overall functionality and the consumersâ?? willingness to carry a connected device in addition to mobile phone.

It is assumed that the devices will have Google Talk, which replaces cellular connectivity. Hence, VoIP and other Google support could make a difference for the Android-based tablets.

Netbooks are dead, they just don’t know it yet. Back in their heyday a few short months ago (an eternity ago in the world of tech gadgets and before the birth of the “beloved” iPad internet tablet) netbooks were small, nifty, and were the talk of all the Best Buy showrooms around the country. Remember those miniature sized laptops with a microscopic 8.9 inch screen that lacked a CD/DVD drive and had a keyboard that loved to cramp up most peoples’ hands? Some of the freakish giant ones had “huge” 10 inch screens. Is this ringing a bell yet? They were bargain priced at somewhere between 0 to 0. Yeah, those. They are like, so 2009.

Did all their batteries die or did their popularity simply die instead? What happened to their reign? Computing devices are notorious for short life spans, but the netbook seems to be especially short lived. What took their place in the spotlight?

Internet tablets are now stealing the show – or more appropriately in this case, the showroom. Whether you choose to call them a touch screen tablet or an Android tablet, you will clearly see their prominent presence in tech stores throughout the United States and around the world. The steadfast popularity of the touch screen tablet is spreading faster than the hopeful netbook had ever dreamed of.

Tech companies such as Apple, Archos, HP, and Asus (and plenty of others) are quickly emerging with newly designed touch screen tablets left and right. Archos seems to have deeply rooted leverage in this sector of computing as they have five new cutting edge Android tablets being released soon. Strike while the iron is hot, right?

Not all of the devices classified as an internet tablet can appropriately be called an Android tablet since obviously not all of them run the Android operating system. All of the new internet tablets from Archos will run the latest version of Android as will several others by other companies.

The Apple iPad, HP Slate, and Archos’ many Android-based internet tablets are evolving into the next big thing with computing connoisseurs who gleefully snub their noses at the lowly netbook. The iPad which has a larger marketing budget than the GDP of a small country is especially popular, so maybe it will reign as king of tablets, but only time will tell for sure.

The weak processing speed of netbooks has made people instantly reach out for a better solution for portable computing. The answer? Touch screen tablets. These days, people want small, fast, and functional – and they wanted it yesterday. As a result, the typical touch screen tablet seems to fit the bill for them. So netbooks had a good short run but will ultimately just be a footnote in history. Rest in peace netbooks, it’s been real.

How Long Will the iPad Last as the King of Tablets?

No doubt about it, the Apple iPad is currently the big kid on the block when it comes to internet tablets. But will this last forever? With new versions of a touch screen tablet springing up all the time, it’s hard to say how long the success of the iPad will last. It seems to be all about Apple right now, but can a competitor beat Apple at its own game?

Companies like Archos are coming out with a line of new Android tablet PCs that are likely to be a direct rival for the iPad and quite possibly take a bite out of Apples’ market share as the popularity of the Android operating system increases. Android tablets are sleek, attractive, and pack quite a punch in the specs department. With 5 new internet tablets on the way, Archos is positioning itself to be a hefty competitor.

How can a touch screen tablet that doesn’t bear the Apple name ever overtake the immense popularity of iPad? The secret of taking out the king of tablets just might lie in the laundry list features of the Archos Android tablet family. Archos knows how to pack a lot of punch into one small device.

Some say the iPad is nothing more than a recreated iPhone or iTouch. It has been pointed out that the iPad has some inherent weaknesses that are getting ignored due to its trendiness. For example, flash isn’t supported with an iPad. The line of Archos Android tablets does, which is a strong selling point. The iPad fails to have a multi-task function or the ability to watch TV (and the iPad doesn’t have USB ports either) but the new Archos internet tablets have all of the above and then some. Other touch screen tablet options besides those from Archos have emerged too – such as the HP Slate and the Microsoft Courier. Quarters 3 and 4 of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 should be filled with a slew of new touch screen tablet debuts from many of the top tech companies looking to break into this increasingly competitive tablet market. Touch screen devices are all the rage now and tech companies will need to jump on the bandwagon in order to keep up with this fast paced industry that is powerfully led by Apple that is constantly evolving.

So when placed head to head, who wins? Is the Apple iPad actually superior or is this whole thing a marketing ploy by their skilled copywriters? Or are the Android tablets underrated pieces of history in the making? Competition for the iPad may be thicker than Apple originally thought.

How Tablets (like the Apple iPad) Are Addressing the Needs of Business Users

When the Apple iPad was first announced, it was positioned as being the natural step between a Smart Phone and a laptop.  Business users have found the email, web surfing and calendar features to be convenient for their “on-the-go” lives, however the question remains: how practical is a tablet computer for business?

In this article we will take a look at new applications that are making tablets better suited to business.  We’ll also look at some upcoming tablet computers, and what they’ll offer the business user.

First off, the downside for business users:

•           Microsoft Office: The Apple iPad does not offer Microsoft Office, nor is Microsoft expected to provide the software for any upcoming tablets (which we’ll be profiling below).  This is a big drawback for business users, who will still have to rely on their laptop / desktop to create Word documents and PowerPoint files.

However, many companies have moved in to help broaden business support in both the Apple tablet, as well as other competing tablets.

New apps that are a boon to the business user:

•           Google Docs Editing: Google has recently announced plans to allow full editing on their Google Docs platform from tablet computers – both the Apple touchscreen tablet, and tablets running the Android platform.  Google Docs allows the creation of documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, and is provided free of change for all users.  This capability greatly enhances tablet devices for business users, as they can now have full business support

•           iWork: As previously mentioned, the iPad does not currently support Microsoft Office.  However, Apple does offer an app for their competing program iWork, which can create documents, spreadsheets and presentations.  It can also import Microsoft Office documents.

•           Conferencing Support: Tablets are also making strides in conferencing support.  For instance, Fuze Box (by Call Wave) allows full web conferencing with both audio and video.

Tablets on the horizon, and how they can help the business user:

There are a number of tablets on the horizon, and many of them may have capabilities that are well suited to the business user.  Here’s a quick look at some of the upcoming tablets:

•           The Samsung Galaxy Tab: The Samsung Galaxy Tab is smaller than the iPad, and is being marketed as a strong solution for business users.  It will have front and rear facing cameras for video conferencing and wireless phone capabilities.  It boasts a Microsoft Document Viewer, which allows users to open and edit Office documents.  Finally, the Galaxy Tab will have full Flash support and allow multitasking, both of which are not currently offered on the iPad.

•           BlackBerry Tablet: Research in Motion is widely rumored to be announcing their new tab within the next few weeks.  Though little is known about it at this point, it is expected that BlackBerry’s usual focus on the business user will be on prominent display once the features of the tablet are announced.

•           Acer Tablet: Again, though features of Acer’s tablet haven’t been officially announced, it will be running on the Android operating system, as the Samsung Tab does, and therefore is expected to have the same range of business support.

With its slideout keyboard, you can set the device up as a laptop or close the keyboard to use it as a touchscreen tablet with 16-points of touch (now that’s what we call multi-touch!). Featuring a 10? display just like the Motorola Xoom, it runs on a 1.66 GHz Oak Trail processor and is expected to release in March with a price tag of 9.

 

iPad 2 (rumors)

While it didn’t make its way to the CES floors, the sheer amount of iPad 2 rumors running through the show might as well put it there. So what can we expect from the iPad 2? The rumor mill suggests a rear-facing camera, Retina Display, dual-core processor and larger storage, in order to make it up to spec with the other tablets on the list. With a rumored release date of sometime between March and April, alongside recent statements from Digg Founder Kevin Rose suggesting the tablet will be announced as soon as within the next “3-4 weeks”, the iPad 2 will no doubt overshadow just about every tablet we saw at CES a couple days ago.
