What we think of typically as sound consists of vibrations in the air reaching our ears. But there are a couple of obstacles that get in the way when we want to make headphones that work underwater.

You would think that just using waterproofing material to made a set of ear buds would work. But the way we hear is actually more complicated.

There are two ways in which we hear things in the open air. The main method is that the sound waves in the air vibrate on our eardrums and the inner ear and the brain converts these signals to what we think of as sound. But we also ‘feel’ the sound wave vibrations in our bones. Especially the bones in our skull. And these also add to the quality of sound we hear.

The first type of hearing, sound waves vibrating on our inner ears and eardrums, doesn’t work when we are underwater. The water in our ears stops the eardrum and inner ear from being able to vibrate the same way it does in the air. Therefore, this part of our hearing is greatly diminished unless we come up with a way to to keep the ear buds and our inner ears dry underwater. Some swimming headphones use this method with special gaskets that keep all the water out. This is quite effective, but usually a bit cumbersome to wear.

Many waterproof headphone manufacturers use a new upcoming method called bone conduction to enable us to hear while underwater.

Bone conduction technology type swimming headphones can work exceptionally well for listening to music or podcasts while you are in the water. But like all good things, there are still a few problems.

• Solar Bypass Diodes for Power Harvesting

The LX2400 IDEALTM Solar Bypass Device with Microsemi’s patented CoolRUN™ technology provides a bypass path in PV module applications. With the industry’s lowest forward voltage drop, resulting in negligible heat generation and temperature rise during operation, the LX2400 is best in class for reliability and robustness, in applications that require currents on the order of 10 amps or more through a module’s junction box.

At only 0.74 mm high, Microsemi’s new Schottky Barrier PV bypass diodes are the thinnest in the world, allowing customers to integrate them under the glass, eliminating the need for junction boxes. Alternatively, the ultra thin dimensions can be used to shrink the size of the junction box. Designed specifically for solar panels, the SFDS series of 10 amp diodes are packaged with unique flexible copper leads that offer satellite-proven reliability.

Alongside the unique packages presented above, Microsemi also offers a wide range of Schottky bypass diodes in axial, surface mount and thru hole devices. The standard current range is 10 A to 18 A with voltages ranging from 20 V to 45 V, but the possibility to design and build custom devices up to 60 A and up to 200 V also exists.

Microsemi’s flash-based architecture utilized in SmartFusion mixed signal FPGAs and IGLOO low power FPGAs is ideal for helping inverter designers maximize efficiency and integration of board-level functionality into a smaller footprint. The new 600 V CoolMOSTM C6 devices feature fifth-generation high voltage superjunction technology for extremely low conduction and switching losses, enabling the design of switching systems that offer new levels of efficiency and power density.

The new MOS 8TM IGBT has been optimized for low frequency operation (10 KHz — 30 KHz), where conduction loss dominates overall system losses. The MOS 8 PT IGBT portfolio provides low conduction loss options at 2.0 V (600 VBR(CES)) and 2.5 V (900 VBR(CES)).

Microsemi also offers IGBTs, MOSFETs and FREDs in addition to other power semiconductor devices in a wide variety of power module electrical and mechanical configurations that facilitate the implementation of new and more efficient converter topologies such as three-level inverters, interleave PFC boost converters and matrix converters.

In addition, Microsemi’s growing DC-to-DC product family supports up to 40 V input voltages across a wide range of current output, up to 40 amps. LG Optimus Pad is the First Tablet with 3D Technology

LG has been sitting silently and watching the competition in the mobile phone industry before it came back with a bang using the LG Optimus Black. It seems that it is the same thing that is happening within the tablet PC of the company as well after LG announced that it will be making the LG Optimus Pad, the world’s first 3D tablet. The LG Optimus Pad is being touted as one of the revolutionary tablet PCs of all time and it is set to provide the answer to the Apple iPad, which has undoubtedly been the best tablet PC since its launch. It is expected that it will finally hand over that title to the LG Optimus Pad once it is launched in the UK amongst many other countries.

The LG Optimus Pad incorporates the 3D technology in both ways. It is not only the viewing department that the 3D technology is going to be incorporated, but also in the recording aspect as well. This is because the tablet PC will be having an 8.9 inch touch screen display that is capable of displaying 3D images. However, the one issue with this display has to be the fact that you need to wear glasses in order to view the 3D content. It was news that was recently leaked after plenty of videos on the YouTube site showed the LG Optimus Pad having 3D content being played on it. The video also revealed that he will be required to wear glasses in order to enjoy the 3D effect.

Even though there is quite a disappointment over the lack of ’3D without a glass’ feature, it is at least heart-warming that the 3D technology revolution has finally begun in the tablet PCs. The other interesting aspect of the tablet PC that will surely be appreciated by a lot of people will be the ability to record 3D content. The presence of the rear camera will presumably allow the LG Optimus Pad to actually record the 3D videos itself. The LG Optimus Pad is expected to be running on the Android 3.0 operating system, which is also called as the honeycomb operating system.
